How do you get a license?  It’s a question that comes up from time to time.  When I was on the mainland, a few people wanted to know how the process works and what does it take to qualify.  As with everything in cannabis, it varies a little from state to state, but for the most part any condition causing severe pain, severe nausea, seizures, or severe and persistent muscle spasms.  Cancer, HIV/AIDS, glaucoma, PTSD, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, epilepsy, and multiple sclerosis are all qualifying conditions.  Insomnia, depression, and anxiety are all considered as well, and in some states are qualifying conditions.  Check with your state or if you have a neighboring state that allows for “Out of State Patients”, or temporary visitor permits.  The laws continue to change, so keep yourself informed about your situation.  I learned something new this last week.  I was under the impression that a 329 Card Holder in Hawaii could cultivate a total of 10 plants and that their caregiver could also cultivate 10 plants.  I was also under the impression that having a “Caregiver” would increase the limit from 4 ounces to 8.  It is not the case.  The Caregiver can grow for the patient, but the limit of plants harvested, or amount stored on site does not increase.  So, lesson learned.

Hawaii’s law allows a patient and caregiver to collectively possess four ounces of processed marijuana and cultivate a total of 10 plants.

Visiting Patients: Patients who are registered in other states and their caregivers will be allowed to possess no more than four ounces of medical cannabis while visiting Hawaii. They will be required to register with Hawaii’s medical cannabis program and could do so for no more than one or two 60-day intervals in a 12-month period. Visiting patients may obtain cannabis from Hawaii dispensaries but may not cultivate it.

Caregivers: Patients may designate a caregiver, who may assist patients by picking up their cannabis from a dispensary. At this time, caregivers may also assist with cultivating patients’ plants.

Limitations: Hawaii law does not allow the medical use of cannabis if it endangers the health or well-being of another person, nor does it allow the medical use of cannabis in a bus, moving vehicle, one’s workplace, on school grounds, or in a place open to the public.

All of this came about as I was preparing to renew my 329 Medical Cannabis License.  I decided to go with the most convenient location, the one in between Ire Smoke Shop and the Big Store in Hilo.  Restorative Message Clinic and the Hawaii Marijuana Medic.  I got an appointment with Dr. Unity on a Sunday afternoon.  Took about 10 minutes to explain my Arthritis condition in my hands and the Fuzion surgery that had been done on my lower back.  She took a look at the surgical scars, and we talked for a few minutes and then it was complete.  Simple and easy process.  Jasmine was a great help in answering any questions that I had and was very easy to work with.  I had arrived early, just out of habit, and noticed I was back on the road home at the time of my appointment.

The Hawaii Medical Cannabis website is where I monitor the application process.  After the first day it was approved by the Doctor and then sent to the State.  Sometime in the next few days the new license will be issued, and I will download the new card.  Also, I will make new Plant Labels with the number and the expiration date.

While traveling last year I was able to get a “Visitors License” for Oklahoma.  While there I was able to record video interviews with some of the staff at a few of the dispensary's.

This week we feature our stop at The Modern-Day Hippie Medical Cannabis Dispensary.  Check out our video interview on the Vodcast but hear it here.

Thanks to Jacob, Colby, and Tiffany for letting us stop in for an interview.  The Modern-Day Hippie in Durant Oklahoma.

Learning As I Grow! –

The Afghan feminized seeds from – Amsterdam Marijuana Seeds, is a 100% Indica-dominant strain. Started out great.  8 out 10 seeds germinated and were placed in pots.  I was anxiously awaiting the sprouts to come up, but they never did.  Could have been a little to cool, too much water, maybe planted too deep.

At first, I was concerned at the size of the seeds.  Smaller than any others I have ever ordered.  Sometimes seeds germinate in a few days, these took 7 or 8 days before showing the first signs of opening.  I was using the seed pods from burpee to germinate the seeds and transplanted soon after they opened.  I have heard of several methods of germinating seeds.  I decided that it was time to invest in a seed germinator.  25$ investment has paid off well.

After the disappointing results from the first attempt, I sent an email to Amsterdam Marijuana Seed Company to see if they had any suggestions.  They recommended that I use the paper towel method and gave me some ideas of what could have occurred to the previous seeds.  I explained that I intended to purchase more seeds in the coming days, and they were nice enough to give me a 20% discount on my next purchase.

So, I ordered all the seeds for the entire year.  With a discount code and a plan, I logged into the website to find a special sale on Auto Flowers strains.  Buy 15 seed pack and get a 15 seed pack for free.  Three strains in the bundle – AK-47 Extreme (good success with this one last year), Amnesia Trance, and Light of Jah.  I also ordered 5 seeds of the strains Purple Power auto-flower, Durban Poison feminized, and the Afghan feminized to replace to last attempt.

Humbling for sure, but a learning experience none the less.   The IPower heated germination kit was just what I needed to increase my success rate with seeds.  A simple heated tray with a dome and adjustable airflow.  I also was able to use the paper towel method in the dome to help the seeds to stay warm and germinate.  100% success rate on 15 seeds.

After the root started growing, I moved the embryos into solo cups for a few days before transplanting into the 5-gallon fabric pots for the remainder of the grow.  After further research I realized that with the rapid growth rate of Auto-flowers it is more beneficial in the final weight (all that matters?) not to transplant these strains.  Going from seedling to final pot in a week seems fast for most strains, but that is what I determined from several sources to be one of the ways to reach full potential with these girls.  Auto-flowers are smaller plants in general, so any stunted growth in the vegetative phase will hinder your production.  It is also recommended that you avoid clones as they will never fully develop, only continue their growth cycle as an auto-flower.  Auto-flowers will flower no matter what light schedule you give them.  Anything less than 16 hours ON is not recommended.  Shorter growth cycle means less weeks with lights on anyway.  I always want to have a grow space and a finish space.

In addition to the Auto-flower strains, I was able to get 5 Afghan girls to start.  They will stay in small cups until they show signs of needing in bigger pots.  The biggest one will be picked for a Mother plant and the other 4 will grow for about 6 weeks before switching them to Flower phase by changing the light cycle.

Another episode will be out soon.  Trying to limit it to 1 per month, with the occasional “Special”.

In the next episode more dispensary interviews and I will share with you the best new piece of equipment I have invested in for the grow.  Can’t believe I waited so long.

Shout out to Big Store Staff thank you for an amazing product.  You always seem to be ahead of the game with new products and innovations.  The dabs were awesome today!

A special thanks and Howdy to Greg in Oak Cliff.  It is always fun to hear the questions that filter back to me through the ladies of our life.  Thanks for your support!

I would also like to take a moment to thank Amsterdam Marijuana Seeds.  After the first attempt didn’t rise up out of the dirt as planned, they were kind enough to listen to my problem and suggest future ways of trying to germinate my seeds.  I was grateful for the discount they gave me on my next purchase, and I do refer to their Grow Guide on a regular basis, so I decided in this year of the Podcast I would make them a sponsor.  I will reach out to them and see if we can get a “Show Coupon” discount code to share with you or any other giveaway ideas they may have.
