Wise Words –

  • 1.    "Dogs have given us their absolute all. We are the center of their universe. We are the focus of their love and faith and trust. They serve us in return for scraps. It is without a doubt the best deal man has ever made."
  • 2.    "Everyone thinks they have the best dog. And none of them are wrong."
  • 3.    "Nobody can fully understand the meaning of love unless he's owned a dog. A dog can show you more honest affection with a flick of his tail than a man can gather through a lifetime of handshakes."
  • 4.    "Intelligent dogs rarely want to please people whom they do not respect."
  • 5.    "A dog is a bond between strangers."
  • 6.    "Dogs' lives are too short. Their only fault, really."
  • 7.    "The greatest fear dogs know is the fear that you will not come back when you go out the door without them."
  • 8.    "Dogs are how people would be if the important stuff is all that mattered to us."
  • 9.    "We can judge the heart of a person by their treatment to animals."
  • 10.  “There is no greater earthly privilege than to have been loved by a dog.”
  • 11.   “Kindly the father said to him, “I’ve left you to the end.  I’ve turned my own name around and called you Dog, my friend.”

 The Story of Spot.

This story really begins with a dog named Koko Milkshake.  Koko was a rescue dog from an Animal Shelter in North Spokane in the fall 1996.  When I brought him home the name was given to him by Joe and Charli.  Koko was a Springer Spaniel.  He was a loyal companion and would do just about anything you wanted.  He was great with the kids and could travel in the pick-up without any issues.  When we moved from the Northwest to Texas in the Spring of 1998 Koko made the trip.

A few years later I purchased some land north of Mt. Vernon in a place called Daphanie Prairie.  It started with 33 acres and then later increased to 60+ acres.  We did it all.  Horses, cows, chickens, goats, and dogs.  Lots of dogs.  Koko was the lead dog and always adjusted well to any additions to the pack.

After a few years on the farm, I noticed one day the Koko was getting thin.  He looked sick.  After a quick test from the Vet, they determined that he had heart worms.  This was my first experience with heart worms.  Trust me when I tell you, don’t skip the preventative medications for heart worms.  It is the saddest thing to watch your pet suffer.  The Vet helped me to understand that Koko was not going to get better and that it was only a matter of time.  I decided to take Koko home.  A few days later he came up missing.  I looked everywhere.  After an extensive search I found him laying underneath the camper down in the woods.  He was having a hard time breathing and couldn’t walk.  It was a difficult thing to do, by I had to put him down that day.  I usually never had a problem doing what “Had to be done on the farm”.  My dad always made me do it, I guess to make me tough.  My Papa always made me help, maybe to teach me what was necessary in certain times.  I don’t like to do it, but I know that in hard times hard decisions get made.

I know what your thinking – “How does this have anything to do with SPOT??”

I will tell you after a song.

This episode we are doing Songs for Spot.  This is an old Pink Floyd tune that always makes Spots ears stand up!

PFC Song – “Seamus(shay-mus)” – Pink Floyd - Meddle
This song always gets Spots attention because he can’t tell where the other puppy is.  Sometimes he would sing along!

The Story of Spot continues:

So, a few months after Koko went to puppy heaven, I was walking down the hall of the radio station and a young lady was sitting in the front reading the paper.  On the back of the paper was the local add for the Animal Shelter.  In that add was a picture of a found dog – missing owner – claim at the shelter…ect.  I asked to see the paper because the picture caught my eye – this dog looked exactly like Koko.

I went to the animal shelter after work and looked at the dog.  His hair was matted, and he was very skittish.  After explaining my story to the nice lady at the shelter, she let me claim the dog, instead of adopting the dog.  If you adopt an animal, it must be neutered or spayed / “fixed”.  If you claim your pet, then there is no fixing.  Without that happening – Spot would not have been born.

I took the dog home and gave him a bath and cut his hair.  I fed him and put him in my bedroom when the school bus arrived.  After Joe, Charli, and Audrey were in the house I set them down on the couch and I said, “I’m about to show you something that is going to make you very excited and confused at the same time, but don’t worry everything is going to be okay.”  Then I went and opened the door and said “this is Koko Number 2”.  We never called him number 2, just Koko.  He fit right in.  It was like our old pal was back.  He had so much in common with the other Koko, that sometimes I forgot that he was somehow resurrected.

Now how does this apply to the Story of Spot?

By the fall of 2007 our pack had grown significantly.  I had a pair of Beagles that could go catch a rabbit and bring it back without ever firing a shot.  I also had 2 Brittny Spaniels that we rescued from a family displaced from hurricane Katrina.

I had breading going on between Koko, the Springer Spaniel and Penny the Brittny Spaniel.  At the same time the Beagle, little Ann, came into heat and she was breading with little Dan.  But I think that Little Dan and Penny had some relations as well, because when you look at Spot, he has some features like a Beagle.  He got the coloration of a Brittny, the tail of a Springer.  His hair, well it has no explanation.  Cross breeding these two caused a dog who constantly sheds hair.  Not sure why, but he sheds.  Anywhere Spot goes, he leaves hair.  We will forever be cleaning away Spot hair.

On November 4th 2007, Spot was born into a litter of 9 puppies.  It was easy to pick him out because he had this orange spot on his head.  He stood out.

On November 5th little Ann (beagle) had a liter of 7 puppies.  One of those puppies was picked to be our new dog.  His name was Snoop.  Cute little beagle pup that would melt your heart.  Unfortunately, he was killed by the school bus one afternoon.  Happened in front of the kids…it was horrible.  After I buried that pup, I went and picked out Spot as our new dog to take with us.

We would be leaving Mt. Vernon in the coming months and moving back to Spokane.  In total, with all the puppies included, we had about 22 dogs on the property.  The puppies were given away at the Grocery story parking lot.  Little kids holding puppies is an easy way to find new owners when they are free.  The Beagles were sold to a hunter.  That guy, he got the best pair of rabbit dogs I had ever seen.

Koko, Penny and another dog Dixie went to a good home with a big family.

2 dogs stayed – Spot and another dog that will remain nameless, because I forgot his name.  That dog killed a neighbor’s chickens one day and that was the last I saw of him.

By July 2008, Spot and I would be the only ones remaining in Texas.  The move to Spokane was done and the family unit was dissolved.  A divorce would come latter, but the details of how I would be a Dad to my kids where very unclear to me.  I didn’t know what was going to happen, but I had this pup, Spot and he was a good companion.

Some people have said that “Spot is not very original, why did you name him that?”  - I could just point to the spot on his head and say “oh yeah, how many Spot’s have you met?  Cause I have met a bunch of Max’s, Duke’s, Dixie’s, Bear’s..ect,.”  usually that would end that conversation.

PFC Song “Clyde” – J.J. Cale – I like this song because it talks about a dog with a tambourine tied to his tale.  From the album Naturally

This is where the Story really begins.

On 8/8/08 Spot met Kathy for the first time.  He fell in love with her and she him.  I would say, if not for the dog, I probably never would have gotten past the third date.  It was clear that he brought her joy.

Third date was the day he shit on your carpet in your condo down on Cedar Springs.

PFC Song – “Hound Dog” – Willie Mae “Big Momma” Thornton

Although this song is not really about a dog, but about a Man being a dog!  Guys don’t be a Dog, be a stand-up guy and own your shit!

We always promised Spot he would have a place to retire.  His own yard, free range, no more leash and he loved it.  For the first year, Spot was up to his old tricks, running off chasing pigs deep down into the jungle, much further than I could go and get him.

One day while trying to herd the goats back to the barn, his hip went out and it took a while for him to recover.  He has lots of tumors and fatty lumps, he is in a state of dementia for a long period of the day.  So, we had to make the decision to let him go.  It would be selfish of us to keep him around just because we are not able or ready to say goodbye.

Goodbye is always hard.  IF it wasn’t hard, then it didn’t matter.

I shared a story a long time ago on my radio program.  It was about a coffin that had an mp3 player or some type of device that would play music for you in the afterlife.  My question to the audience then was “If you had one song to play in your coffin, what would it be”.  My answer is Rivera Paradise.  The story behind the recording is what is so incredible.  Chris Layton explained that Stevie had his back to the control board and everyone else who was in the studio.  The tape on the Mixer was running low and the Engineer was trying to signal for a stop, but Stevie didn’t see him.  As the Stevie is playing the last notes of the song, the tape runs out at the same moment that he finished.  It’s an incredible story and a wonderful song.  Enjoy this one Spot!
