 Talking Saves Lives:

Someone asked me the other day how to get started with the VA system.  He asked if he should just go down to the VA office with his DD-214 and get started.  I told him that would work, but I started online at VA.gov.

It took me a long time to finally do it.  I think I just didn’t want to go through any bs.  But it turned out to be the best decision.  Not only did I get help for some of the problems I was having, but they eventually got me the surgery I needed to walk.  Of course, there is always set backs and hiccups.  The VA System is a little different from place to place, but the one thing I have always found was people who care about the patients, and they appreciate you.  I know they put up with a lot from people, so I do admire their tenacity and dedication.

I remind myself as well as everyone who listens – talking saves lives.

Remember that your thoughts are just thoughts.  You can change your thoughts.

What is a Crutch?

When I hand out the Free Crutches sometimes people will say “What is a Crutch?”  I usually just say, it’s something the locals do when they smoke a joint, they put it in a cardboard crutch.  My doctor thought it was sort of a way of saying that the Podcast was like a crutch you could lean on.  I had never used a cardboard crutch.  I had used the little glass tube (joint holder), the brass one, the stone, a roach clip, I have even used a paper clip.

It's a simple process, just take the Free Crutch and tear it in half.  Then roll one piece up like a tube.  Now wrap it around the joint and you have a crutch.  It keeps your fingers from getting any resin on them.  You can adjust the crutch as needed when the joint gets down to the roach.

When I started handing out the self-printed versions, a guy at the counter in the store said, “I hope you don’t care, but I will be using this as a crutch”.  That’s when it hit me – Call them crutches and not “Promotional Cards” …

For people that don’t use a crutch, (I don’t roll joints much anymore) they are just an easy reminder of the podcast and of course you can pass it along.  I recently got a new line added on that reads “Help Stop Veterans Suicide”.  The other question I get the most is “What is your podcast about?” – sometimes I say, “it’s about getting high”, or “it’s about my experience living off grid in HI”, or sometimes I just say, “It’s about me”.

Some people may now try to use a crutch, so I will have to make a video of it for the YouTube channel!  If you google joint crutch you will see a variety of options.

What does “Crutch” mean? Otherwise known as a filter or tip, the crutch is a small bit of stiff paper that acts as a mouthpiece for a joint. When done correctly, a crutch prevents burnt plant matter from reaching your lips, mouth, and lungs by providing a buffer between the burning part of the joint.

Pot’s Happening??!

Despite a global pandemic, discombobulated supply chains, ballooning inflation and an ongoing fight to legalize marijuana on a federal level, the cannabis industry in America is flourishing.

Sales hit $20 billion in 2020, are on pace to top $26 billion this year, and are projected to leapfrog to $45.9 billion in 2025, according to data from Marijuana Business Daily that were shared at the MJBizCon, the industry's annual trade show. The nearly $46 billion in sales would make the cannabis industry larger than the craft beer industry, said Chris Walsh, chief executive officer and president of MJBizDaily.

Snowballing US sales shouldn't come as a surprise. At this point, the majority of Americans live in a state where some form of cannabis is legal. More than two-thirds of US states have legalized medical cannabis, of those, 18 have legalized cannabis for recreational use.

Indeed, the cannabis industry got a pandemic-era boost from consumers flush with stimulus money, people forced to stay home with little to do, and dispensaries in certain states being deemed essential businesses. Many states, including trailblazers like Colorado, posted record sales in 2020.

But the past 12 to 18 months show there is more to the story than a Covid bump, Walsh said. Sales continued to accelerate at a record pace in markets across the US -- notably in established states, such as Colorado, Washington and Oregon.

The industry is also expanding rapidly and creating jobs.

It's estimated that there were 321,000 full-time jobs in the cannabis industry in 2020, up from 234,700 the year before, according to a report released earlier this year from Leafly and Whitney Economics.

 |  | A review found that "numerous publications suggest that cannabinoids and extracts of Cannabis sativa have potent anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrogenic properties."

A study of cannabis vaporizer cartridges indicated that "chromium, copper, nickel, as well as smaller amounts of lead, manganese, and tin migrate into the cannabis oil and inhaled vapor phase, resulting in a possible acute intake of an amount of inhaled metals above the regulatory standard of multiple governmental bodies" and that "non cartridge heating methods of cannabis flower and concentrate were compared, and results indicate that the heating device itself is a source of metal contamination."

The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company's cannabis-focused Hawthorne unit reported quarterly sales of $329.1 million.

Microsoft funded research on using hemp and other sustainable materials to build data centers.

Leafly published a report finding that cannabis is the fifth most valuable crop in the U.S.
